LAS-O200, Intro to Contemporary Latin American Culture, 3crs
This introduction to Latin American Studies focuses on the rich cultural heritage that has come to form part of the Latin American identity. Using literature, film, music and visual arts, both produced by and about Latin America, student study the issues that have faced the region and its people throughout its recent history and had an impact on its identity. This is an interdisciplinary course that allows students to understand Latino communities through different academic lenses.
(This course is also a Knowledge-Values Course for the Creative Arts and Cultures category of the Loyola Core, but it cannot count in both areas for TISE students. TISE students must take a different Creative Arts and Cultures course.)
SPAN-A330, Spanish Across Disciplines, 3 crs
This is a variable-topic class that stresses vocabulary, writing, and oral skills in Spanish pertaining to specific disciplines, such as Social Work or Journalism, and other professions. Through reading texts, discussions in class, and writing, students practice the vocabulary and approaches for the profession(s) and learn about cultural specifics.
Prerequisite: SPAN A300 or permission of instructor
SPAN-A400, Advanced Syntax and Composition, 3 crs
This course develops and fine-tunes writing skills, including grammar difficulties, problem translations, and complex constructions through readings, in-class exercises, and creative, engaged writing.

TISE-A402, Introduction to Translation and Interpreting, 4 crs
This hybrid course is composed of 8 weeks online, and 8 weeks on campus. Students are introduced to the disciplines of translation and interpreting, and of how to switch safely and accurately between the source and the target language (Spanish<>English); it includes an intensive study of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure in a variety of fields.
Prerequisite: SPAN-A400 with a grade of B or higher, plus interview with department
TISE-A456, Healthcare Translation and Interpreting, 4 crs
An intensive study of healthcare vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and translation difficulties, this hybrid course is composed of 8 weeks online, and 8 weeks on campus. Students are introduced to the discipline of healthcare translation and interpreting. Students learn how to convey oral and written health-related issues between the source and the target language (Spanish<>English).
TISE-A462, Legal Translation and Interpreting, 4 crs
An intensive study of legal vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and translation difficulties, this hybrid course is composed of 8 weeks online, and 8 weeks on campus. Students are introduced to the discipline of legal translation and interpreting. Students learn how to convey oral and written issues pertaining to legal matters between the source and the target language (Spanish<>English).
TISE-A497, Translation and Interpreting Internship, 3 crs
A forty-hour intership is the final course in the TISE program. Students gain first-hand experience in the field working with official organizations and agencies that have established partnerships with the University.
