Sequences

In addition to completing the core requirements, students must complete a sequence of courses for a particular communication field. Sequences are journalism: online, electronic and print; and strategic communications: advertising or public relations.

For students majoring in mass communication, the SMC offers emphasis areas. These are designed to allow students to use their communications electives to focus on a particular area. These areas are photography, sports communication, non-profit communication and environmental communication.

General requirements

  • Mass Communication majors are required to have a minor, a set of courses in a field of study outside the School of Mass Communication. Requirements for minors are specified elsewhere in the bulletin.
  • Students are required to complete an internship to gain professional experience in their field of study.
  • The Mass Communication major is 40 hours. No more than 48 hours in Mass Communication courses may be counted toward the 120 hours needed for the degree.
